Description

New York: Wittenborn and Company, 1969-1974, various sizes. Interesting collection of material issued by the prominent New York art book dealer George Wittenborn. The lot comprises various newsletters, lists, catalogues and subscription forms documenting a wide variety of books and publications in the fields of architecture, art, graphic design, photography and visual communication along with artists’ books, editions and exhibition catalogues.

Through these documents we can trace a gradual shift from art reference publications and books on art – mostly of historical nature or relating to modernism – to more contemporary sensibilities via the separate lists regarding exhibition catalogues. This period is also heavy on architecture, graphic design and visual communication with the hints of photography. Notable is the regular presence of separate newsletters dedicated to Italian Art Books.

In winter of 1973 we find a list of ‘Limited Editions, Original Graphics’ offering pieces by Beuys, Indiana and Köpcke along with ones by Braque, Chagall, Picasso, Toyen and portfolios ‘Art Scene Dusseldorf’ and ‘Grafik des Kapitalistischen Realismus’ setting the tone for 1974 offerings.

Many pieces come in their original envelopes – all addressed to the collector Tjeerd Deelstra.
